Open New Opportunities with Hydrogen

In order to achieve a low-carbon society,
the off-road industry is currently considering electrification and new power sources.
As one of the proposals for the realisation of a carbon-neutral society,
Yanmar Power Technology is working on the technological development
of a hydrogen engine suitable for off-road machinery.

Hydrogen features The eco-friendly and sustainable
fuel of the future.

GHGfree

Hydrogen engines produce no carbon dioxide during combustion, resulting in a minimal environmental impact. Furthermore, when generated from renewable energy sources, hydrogen itself does not release GHGs during its production.
※GHG: Greenhouse gases

Rich in Resources

Hydrogen can be produced by electrolyzing water with electricity from renewable energy sources. Hydrogen is rich in resources, offering a bright and sustainable energy future.

Compatibility & High reliability

Concept
Hydrogen Engine Based on the
Newly Developed Diesel Engine

Our preceding developed hydrogen engine is based on Yanmar Power Technology's newly developed diesel engine 4TN101(displacement:3.8). This aims to maintain structural compatibility with the diesel version and enable a seamless transition to a hydrogen engine without significant modifications to existing vehicles.
For many years, Yanmar has been supplying the off-road powertrains throughout the world. In recent years, Yanmar has been complying with the emission regulations of many countries and has been using its own accumulated technologies to comply with multi fuels (gas, bio, HVO, etc.). We are also contributing to the realization of a low-carbon society.

Yanmar offers a wide range of off-road machinery such as tractors, excavators and a variety of other machinery. Diesel and gas engines are used in these off-road machines, but we are also working on the preceding development of hydrogen engines in order to achieve carbon neutrality as stated in Yanmar Green Challenge 2050.

Aims to achieve the same specifications as diesel engines while overcoming the challenges particular to hydrogen.

Although it is a concept engine, the main theme of the project at the start was whether it would be possible to satisfy customers by replacing the industrial engines with hydrogen engines.
Based on the diesel engine 4TN101, we used simulation to study the specifications while maintaining a high level of engine design commonality and we also created an environment that minimized the environmental impact as much as possible when creating the actual engine.
The combustion systems and basic features of diesel and hydrogen are very different. Industrial engines need to have high levels of responsiveness so that they can operate stably even with large fluctuations in engine speed.
The challenge at hand is to find ways to adapt hydrogen engines to a wide variety of uses.

Next generation energy attracting worldwide attention.

As well as the search for a stable combustion method for hydrogen, there is also the question of how hydrogen can be installed in industrial machinery and how it can be replenished. You might also think that there are more disadvantages, such as the fact that it is a flammable gas and we need to take safety considerations into account. However, hydrogen is a gas that is found all over the planet and can be made from renewable energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.), so it will never run out. It also has the advantage of being superior to electricity in terms of energy density. The use of hydrogen is attracting attention from all over the world, including developed countries, as one of the next generation energy sources. For about 10 years, Yanmar has been involved in the development of hydrogen systems for marine use. We have been working on the commercialization of hydrogen from demonstration tests to its implementation in society.

Extend the scope of our proposals towards a carbon-neutral society.

For industrial machinery, we do not intend to replace everything with hydrogen engines, but to expand the range of our proposals by using existing diesel engines and electric powertrains in different ways. The differences in the way each type of industrial machinery is used mean that all powertrains are suited to different applications. We are aiming to build a product line-up that will enable the best possible proposals to be made for our customers.
