AMERICA’S CUP

The origins of the top sailing race in the world

The America's Cup is considered the pinnacle of international yacht racing and dates back to the 1851 annual regatta of the Royal Yacht Club of England. The schooner America, representing the pride of American yachting technology, crossed the Atlantic Ocean to challenge the British who were considered to be the leading yachtsmen of their time. The "America" created a sensation by defeating the British yachting fleet. The silver cup, worth 100 guineas awarded to the American team as proof of their victory was named the "America's Cup," and remains the symbol of the world's greatest yacht race to this day.
The winning crew donated this silver cup to their yacht club. The first America's Cup was held in 1870, with the statement, "Whoever holds this silver cup must accept all challengers.” This was the beginning of the America's Cup, which has continued for more than 150 years.

They invest billions in racing for simply the "honor" of winning and for national prestige.

It's not just a yacht race ....... Larry Ellison, owner of Oracle Team USA, winner of the 33rd and 34th races, has poured tens of billions of dollars of his personal fortune. Numerous sea-loving millionaires have tried their hand at the America's Cup, including England's tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton and American railroad executive Harold Vanderbilt.
What makes them so passionate about the America's Cup?
A battle for national prestige, fast-moving yachts, technology and innovation, advanced sailing skills, and a shared sense of history and tradition. These various elements are blended together, but perhaps the source of the fascination comes from the old colonial rivalry of a young, independent America challenging a traditional and aristocratic England.
Today, the owners of each team are still primarily the world's richest people. In the United States, Doug DeVos, Chairman of Amway (total assets of over $5 billion) and Roger Penske, chairman of PENSKE, a major truck rental company (total assets of $4 billion); in Switzerland, entrepreneur Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of the Prada Group in Italy, Sir James Ratcliffe, chairman of the chemical company INEOS in England. These wealthy entrepreneurs are all men of the sea who love nature and sailing. Their only material gain from winning the America's Cup is the "honor" of being an elite sailor, and they continue to challenge themselves in this great race for that reason alone.

Why does the America's Cup attract so much global attention?

Since the first competition, the U.S. has defended the trophy 24 consecutive times and for 132 years. In 1983, "Australia II" was the first to beat the New York Yacht Club and bring home the Cup from the U.S.
In the more than 170-year history of the America's Cup, only four countries (the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Switzerland) have won the trophy. Many countries, including the United Kingdom, have tried, but only four have won the cup. It is such a difficult competition to win.

Each team builds a racing yacht according to the rules. Using various technologies such as shipbuilding engineering, architectural engineering, fluid dynamics, and meteorology, they focus on building a racing yacht faster than anyone else.
In recent years, the technology of "foiling" has undergone remarkable development, enabling even faster sailing by generating lift in the water. The outstanding technology of each team is one of the attractions of the America's Cup.

Challenging The Power of People

Endurance, excitement, teamwork, since the first America’s Cup Regatta back in 1851,
generations of sailors have challenged themselves to push back the barriers of human possibility and technology. Like them, Yanmar believes in the power of people to challenge and create new possibilities and technologies. We call this “Hanasaka” and it reflects our belief in the potential of people.

Yanmar has found the essence of the relationship between "people" and "nature" in the sport of sailing, which uses "wind," the most ancient renewable energy.

The America's Cup will serve as a catalyst for further possibilities for Yanmar and will contribute to the creation of future products that combine the most advanced mechanisms, design, and technology.

Yanmar continues to support America's Cup

Yanmar marine engines have a 75% share of the world market for sailboats and have earned the trust of many sailors. The reliability of Yanmar engines was recognized at the 33rd and 34th competitions, where they were used in the Oracle Team USA's chase boats, supporting the team's three consecutive championships. The engines were able to chase the race boats that raced at speeds of 50 knots per hour because they were built by Yanmar.

Sustainability is also an important theme for 37th competition and promoting initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions through the operation of the races. As one of these efforts, the hydrogen fuel cell foiling boat developed by Emirates Team New Zealand will serve as a chase boat.
Yanmar is developing a wide range of alternative energy solutions under the "Yanmar Green Challenge 2050" to become a greenhouse gas free (GHG-free) company. Our front-line innovations - HVO certified engines, hydrogen fuel cells, battery technology, and hydrogen engine technology - challenge our unwavering commitment to providing a green and sustainable future for the world.
