Since its founding in 1912, Yanmar has worked to tackle challenges and drive innovation, with diesel engine technology at its core. As we support the industry and put out products that pave the way for the future, we also began to strengthen our design and branding efforts in 2012, the company’s 100th anniversary. In 2015, YANMAR launched its first in-house design team, focusing not only on functionality but also on pursuing designs that create new value for society.
In 2023, we dug deep to answer the question, “What makes a design uniquely Yanmar?” This led to the development of our new design philosophy, “Intrinsic Design”and a design direction we call “Gentleness and Toughness.”Intrinsic Design seeks to go beyond form and style, and attempts to capture the essence of things. The gentleness and toughness approach reflects our commitment to the spirit of our founder, designing with care and consideration for users while taking on challenges with strength.
This exhibition presents a range of projects by Yanmar’s in-house design team, as well as various projects developed under our direction, in collaboration with our global partners. From industrial design to graphic design, architecture, and packaging design, we invite you to explore the often-unseen world of in-house design. We hope you enjoy this opportunity to reflect on the past 10 years and experience the “vision of tomorrow” envisioned by Yanmar.

History of Yanmar design

Yanmar design, which has contributed at the right place and time for each business since its founding, was renewed on its 100th anniversary in 2012. In 2015, with the establishment of the design team, Yanmar shifted to the phase of utilizing and spreading the team internally and externally worldwide. Currently, we are making the foundation for employees to build their own brands through “YANMAR PRODUCT VISION,” a forward-thinking design approach with an eye on future ventures combined with the construction of a design platform.

“YPV: Yanmar Product Vision,” a forward-thinking design approach visualizing Yanmar’s next-generation design. The platform is built by merging the design elements generated by YPV, which envisions the future, with the design principles that Yanmar has cultivated through the years. The platform can be utilized for any design project, enhancing its value to the customer by improving both the design’s efficiency and depth of dimension.

Yanmar’s field of operations extends globally, across land, sea, and cities. In addition to product design for agriculture, maritime, construction machinery, engines, and energy, Yanmar design is active in a broad range of other sectors, including architecture, parks, food, and sports. Rooted in “inclusive branding,” which considers not only those within the company but all people, including businesses and general consumers, as stakeholders, we implement designs that create empathy.

MIRU
An original Yanmar-produced commercial animation. The story represents Yanmar’s aspirations to open up a path to the future by combining the richness of both people and nature. Yanmar’s design team led the initial design of the main character. The attachments mounted to its back were inspired by real Yanmar products, and it was created as a weaponless robot that helps people in need.
Yanboh Marboh
The renewed Yanboh Marboh, the longtime favorite corporate mascot characters created for domestic use in 1959. Yanmar collaborated with independent creators to produce three designs containing their deep affection for Yanboh Marboh. The ninth-generation character designs were decided through a public vote, ensuring that they will be loved for years to come.

This includes a wide variety of projects, from the logo design to the signage, with the aim of creating a park that is loved by the community. Everything from the moment you reach the station to the excitement of moving to the park was designed.
