On 3-4 October 2024, the 7th edition of the Holland Fisheries Event took place on Urk. The event is an important trade fair for the Dutch fishing and maritime industry. The location is no coincidence: Urk is home to the largest fishing fleet and seafood processing industry in the Netherlands.

Yanmar Europe participated in the event alongside Werft Shipbuilding. Werft is a young shipyard, dedicated to building Dutch fishing vessels again on Urk for the first time in 25 years. Yanmar and Werft have formed a partnership for the supply of medium-speed propulsion engines that will power these new ships.

Boost for the maritime industry

Their joint exhibition stands drew significant attention, showcasing attractive photography and a scale model of the new fishing cutter. Among the visitors was the new mayor of Urk, who expressed great interest in the collaboration between these two companies from Flevoland. He appreciated the partnership for providing a boost to the local fishing industry. Additionally, he praised the strong connection Yanmar Europe has established with Firda, the local vocational maritime school, which helps to improve job prospects for young people.

Optimism in the sector

Richard Lesteluhu, Area Manager Nort-West & Mid-Europe at Yanmar Europe looks back on a successful trade fair.

“While the focus was on the Dutch fishing industry, there was also international interest. After some difficult years, due in part to European regulations, we observed renewed optimism, which was reflected on the exhibition floor.”

Z-575 Janneke draws attention

Jan Cees Kater, Project Engineer at Werft Shipbuilding adds:

“Many visitors were eager to talk about the Z-575 Janneke, the first multi-purpose fishing vessel from our shipyard. She is nearly ready to be launched and start her job at sea. This will mark the next exciting step in our collaboration with Yanmar.”
