Green shipping innovations at SMM Hamburg 2024

September 27, 2024
Yanmar Europe B.V.

From 3 to 6 September, Yanmar successfully participated in SMM Hamburg, the world’s leading maritime trade fair, with over 48,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. It was a great opportunity to share our vision for a sustainable maritime future and connect with new and well-known shipbuilders and shipping companies from so many countries.

Focus on green shipping

Decarbonization and alternative fuels were the focal points of this year’s event, aligning closely with Yanmar’s long-term strategy for sustainability. On our stand, we presented our vision for the future and our action in all directions towards alternative fuels used in our 4-stroke medium and high-speed engines.

Our key development highlights at SMM 2024

• Full focus on and investments in the development of alternative fuel technologies, such as a DF methanol solution, ammonia, and hydrogen.
• The preview of a new product to be added to the Dual Fuel (DF) LNG technology portfolio.
• Global market launch of DF methanol-powered 6/8EY auxiliary engines scheduled from mid-2026 onwards.
• All current EY series engines approved for using biofuel up to 100% (B100) without any engine modifications or adjustments required.

Hydrogen and methanol as two of the innovation drivers for a cleaner future

The development of hydrogen power for commercial marine applications is one of the main focuses in Yanmar. Strongly supported by the Japanese government, Yanmar is developing this technology in partnership with two other Japanese engine makers in a joint venture.

Methanol is also drawing attention, driven by European shipping owners which is reflected in the numbers of new building orders for methanol or methanol-ready vessels worldwide. Our new 6/8EY auxiliary engines with DF methanol are currently scheduled to enter the market as of mid-2026, providing a cleaner and sustainable option for the global maritime industry. These dual fuel technology auxiliary engines will boost performance while supporting sustainable fuel use in one go.

Dual fuel/LNG and ammonia: alternative solutions for sustainability

We’re also making progress with ammonia-fueled engine as a carbon-free fuel that offers zero CO2 emissions. Tests are ongoing to ensure the safety and effectiveness of ammonia, as it requires careful handling.

Another step forward is that all our EY marine engines have passed Yanmar’s strict production standards and are now approved for B100 biofuel as a 100% renewable, biodegradable biodiesel.

SMM Hamburg gave us a valuable chance to connect with industry partners and explore new opportunities, as we work towards a cleaner, greener future for shipping.
