Yanmar has under development several alternative fuels for use in advanced technology industrial vehicles. At the last bauma exhibition, the company announced an electric powertrain strategy and introduced unique battery technology to offer OEMs a one-stop solution as they move further to electrification. At the heart of Yanmar's transition is the acquisition of battery-technology specialist ELEO, and in January 2023, in Helmond, The Netherlands, a new factory was officially opened by His Majesty the King Willem Alexander.

In March 2023, ConExpo saw the launch of its latest product, an energy-dense cell battery designed especially for the off-road market. Being highly modular, different configurations can be accommodated on the vehicle while retaining the same tooling and production process. This offers easy customisation for OEMs with a range from 10-1,000kWh. The modules are provided as full turnkey solutions for direct installation with a customised enclosure. Lately, the representatives of ELEO were exhibiting an IVT Expo in June in Köln Messe and took part in a round table discussion at Agritechnica exhibition in Germany, last November.

Yanmar permits the use of alternative fuels

On the fuel front, Yanmar has expanded its warranty cover under the EN15940 Standard to include Gas-to-liquid (GTL), Biomass-to-liquid (BTL) and hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVOs). Now operators can be comfortable using these alternative fuels knowing they are safe while accepting performance may change due to cetane rating.

3TNV88F hybrid engine

Also shown publicly for the first time at bauma, a hybrid model 3TNV88F. This features an 18kW engine coupled to a 14kW motor via an integrated electric clutch. It offers improved economy of up to 10% and can be used in both “Zero Emission Mode” or “High Power Mode”. Inline e-clutch allows automatic transition for smooth operation.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Following on from the successful test of a boat equipped with a 300kW hydrogen fuel cell system in 2021, Yanmar Power Technology (YPT) has made its first delivery of its newly commercialised maritime hydrogen fuel cell system. Advanced hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion technologies will remain YPT's key focus of R&D to sustain a successful industry transition.

It’s all part of a move away from fossil fuels, which Yanmar refers to as the “The Green Challenge 2050.” Yanmar declares that it will become an environmentally burden-free and GHG-free company based on recyclable resources, further strengthening its activities to realise A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE, the company’s brand statement.
