Yanmar Europe B.V.

Work has started on the fourth and final service operation vessel (SOV) at the Vard Vung Tau shipyard in Vietnam. After completion in 2024 the ship will be working in the North Sea helping to support the maintenance activities at the Dogger Bank Wind Farm, some 130 kilometres off the north east coast of England.

She’s a bespoke design, and operator North Star Shipping is keeping details a closely guarded secret at the present. What is known is that she’s specified to have four 6EY22ALWS generating 1,370kWm–1,300kWe.

She’ll be providing accommodation for up to 60 technicians in hotel-style rooms, and tasks undertaken in service will include cargo handling and warehouse storage. She will have a height-adjustable motion-compensated gangway with an elevator system, a height-adjustable boat transfer system and a 3D-compensated crane for cargo transfer.

Staff will move around on a “walk-to-work” gangway or use a smaller vessel for longer trips. When fully operational the site is expected to generate enough power for 5% of UK demand, supplying up to six million homes.
