YANMAR Europe has introduced seven EU Stage V certified diesel engines for generator use to the European inland shipping market with capacities between 5 and 40 kVA.

Regional Sales Manager Martijn van Gerner notes that YANMAR is exploring all possibilities and opportunities in the Dutch market and is considering investments that can be recouped in the future. “The 7 Stage V certified industrial generator sets are a first result of our current and future strategy.”

New engine development

YANMAR sees opportunities for new engines with customers in the seagoing vessels who demand high reliability, durability and long-life with low maintenance costs. “Therefore, we are developing new heavy-duty high-speed engines with common rail system in Japan. Like our other engines in this sector, they are specially designed and purpose-built for marine applications. We don’t believe in converting truck engines into marine engines. That’s why we follow a dedicated R&D programme for all our marine engines,” says Tigelaar.

"With the 6 &12 cylinder high speed common rail marine engine series, we aim the sea going market, where we offer the common rail and mechanical version of these engines,” says Senior Area Manager Hero Bouwman. “These engine series complies with the latest IMO Tier-II and Tier-III emission regulations for which we see good opportunities in the European market.

Engines installed after 1 January 2021, must meet the IMO Tier-III standard in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. We are working on new projects to install IMO Tier-III engines in a number of ferries and the prospects are good.

Medium speed engines

“The seagoing vessels and innovative fishing vessels and fish carriers powered by Medium Speed large main engines and generators are an important market for us, where we have built up a large and reliable customer base,” says Eric Tigelaar.
