The king of the forest

Yanmar Compact Equipment EMEA
A company specializing in forestry activities is using a Yanmar ViO80-1 midi excavator, equipped with a forestry grapple and chainsaw kit, in a forest in the locality of Guanzate, in the province of Como, Italy. Basic requirements for the choice of the vehicle: its “zero tail swing” design and the efficient hydraulic system with which this model is equipped.

Guanzate is an Italian town in the province of Como, Lombardy, Italy. It is home to Falconeri Carmelo, a recently established family business founded on many years of experience accumulated in the forestry sector by its owner, Carmelo Falconeri, which he now shares with his son Tomas. At present, although there are opportunities on the horizon that will also be exploited in the future in the area of garden maintenance and construction work, the main activity of the Lombard company remains forestry, which Falconeri Carmelo does in the Como and Varese areas using a dozen of its own vehicles.
Among them is a Yanmar ViO80-1 midi excavator purchased in October 2023, recently used in a logging activity right in the town of Guanzate, in an area of about 5,000 m2, where the machine - equipped with a forestry grapple equipped with a chainsaw kit - is used to perform log cleaning (after the logs are duly cut by hand with a chainsaw) and related cutting. A task that needed an excavator with the appropriate capacity and size to deal with such a task and a complex natural environment.
Suitable for the forest environment
"We purchased the Yanmar ViO80-1 midi excavator in October 2023," explains Carmelo Falconeri, "and we immediately allocated it to the forestry activity in which we are protagonists in Guanzate. We chose this model because for our interventions we need a medium-sized machine, capable of performing maneuvers with extreme tranquility and efficiency, even in limited spaces.” Inside the woods, for obvious reasons, the compactness of the machine and its ‘zero tail swing’ structure, where the counterweight and the front part of the upper frame remain within the footprint of the tracks, are essential. Its rear turning radius of 1,135 mm allows for a variety of maneuvers even in very tight spaces and gives Falconeri the ability to work with great efficiency even in the presence of obstacles – characteristic of underbrush, for example. ¬¬
In addition, Yanmar's VICTAS system helps to ensure adequate stability on terrain characteristic of forested areas by increasing the track width by moving the lateral tilt axis outward through the use of asymmetrical tracks. Speaking of the hydraulic circuit, this was a basic element when the Lombard company purchased the excavator, as Tomas Falconeri confirms: "Our business requires the use of special equipment, such as the forestry grapple equipped with a chainsaw kit used on this occasion, so it was necessary for the excavator to have a six-way hydraulic system to adequately support the flows intended for opening, closing, rotation and cutting. In this case, the Yanmar ViO80-1 midi excavator proved to be a perfect 'support' coupled with the forestry grapple, allowing logs to be grasped, moved quickly and safely, and cut precisely."
A competent partner
Falconeri Carmelo's needs have also been met thanks to the support of dealer Canziani Paolo, which ensures timely and professional advice and assistance to all its customers. The dealer in Saronno (Varese), moreover, celebrated in 2023 30 years of collaboration with Yanmar and is a "historical" dealer active in the sale and rental of the entire range of the Japanese brand in several strategic areas of Northern Italy, operating in the sale of earthmoving, construction and road machinery and offering on the market an accurate sales and rental service of new and used vehicles.
"Falconeri Carmelo,” - Renato Coccoli explains – “is an interesting and challenging client for us, being active in a different field from the conventional one, considering that we deal with companies mainly active in the road and Construction sector. Carmelo and Tomas also understood that Yanmar machines are a combination of technology and reliability even in special areas such as forestry. The technological content of these machines, on the other hand, along with their reliability, are a strength that distinguish the manufacturer and are elements that are well received by those in the industry."
